Fatal Silver Spring Route 29 crash death of Florence Chumbow – Obituary
Montgomery County police confirmed the identity of Florence Chumbow, a 73-year-old woman from Silver Spring, who tragically passed away after being struck by multiple vehicles on Route 29 in Silver Spring on Monday evening. Police responded to the scene at about 6:40 p.m. after receiving a report of a pedestrian being hit. Upon arrival, emergency crews found Chumbow’s lifeless body in the southbound lanes near Fairland Road.
According to police, Chumbow was crossing the road when she was first hit by a 1999-2003 Toyota Solara, which did not stop. The driver of the Solara continued southbound without assisting Chumbow. Witnesses noted that she had crossed against a green signal, placing her in the path of the vehicle. The second collision happened when a Ford Crown Victoria, traveling east on Fairland Road, ran over Chumbow after the initial impact.
Authorities have identified the driver of the Ford Crown Victoria, but they are still searching for the driver of the Toyota Solara. The car, believed to have sustained damage on the left side, may have a broken headlight assembly and a missing side-view mirror, among other signs of collision damage.
Police had initially sought a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck involved in the incident, but after further investigation and witness interviews, they confirmed it was not connected to the accident.
