Fatal Wasilla, Alaska house fire death of Ryan McDonough – Obituary

Ryan McDonough, 46, a cardiologist from Wasilla, Alaska, died in his home after a fire on December 13, 2025. McDonough was the only occupant of the house when the blaze occurred, just one day after he had been released on bail following his arrest on charges of possessing child sexual abuse material.

The Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office determined that McDonough died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and investigators do not suspect foul play in his death. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by Alaska State Troopers.

McDonough had served as an Interventional Cardiologist at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and was terminated on December 11. He had also previously served on the State Medical Board but resigned in November 2025. Officials noted that his criminal charges were not known to the administration prior to December, as routine background checks do not reveal ongoing investigations.
