A man was killed and a woman injured in a violent altercation inside a northwest Calgary home last week, which police have ruled as a case of self-defence. The incident took place during a property showing in the community of Edgemont, where 48-year-old Shahbaz Ahmed attacked the woman, prompting a struggle that led to his death. The woman, in her 30s, was taken to the hospital with stable injuries, while Ahmed was pronounced dead at the scene.

Calgary police determined that Ahmed lured the woman to the property under the pretense of a real estate showing. Despite precautions, including bringing her father along as a witness, the woman was attacked by Ahmed once they were inside the home. After a violent struggle, the woman and her father managed to escape, alerting neighbours who called 911.

An autopsy confirmed Ahmed’s identity, and following a detailed investigation, police concluded the woman acted in self-defence. The homicide was classified as non-culpable, and no charges will be laid. Police noted that while the pair had been in contact before the incident, they were not in a domestic relationship, and Ahmed was previously known to authorities.
