Fatal Palm Bay house fire death of Sherill Vandemaat – Obituary

Sherill Vandemaat, 75, and her 10-year-old grandson, Noah Baus, were killed in a house fire on Janus Road in Palm Bay, Florida, early Monday morning, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Firefighters arrived to find the home largely engulfed in flames, with the roof already collapsed. Despite efforts to reach the occupants through doors and windows, first responders were unable to enter due to the intensity of the fire. A 54-year-old woman, Vandemaat’s daughter and Noah’s mother, survived after being treated for smoke inhalation.

Neighbors described the loss as devastating, particularly given the boy’s presence in the community, often seen playing outside. The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
