Nicholas Horning, 23, was struck and killed by a Mooresville police officer last Friday night, authorities confirmed. The Morgan County coroner identified Horning, who was just 23, and the community has expressed shock and grief over his untimely death.

According to Mooresville Metropolitan Police Department Chief Kerry Buckner, Horning had just left a local liquor store when he suddenly ran into the path of a police vehicle. The officer had been attempting to locate a speeding car seen near the police department at the time of the incident.

Two investigations were conducted following the crash. The department carried out an internal review to determine whether the officer adhered to police protocols, while the Morgan County Serious Crash Investigation Team conducted an independent inquiry. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave. The internal investigation’s findings will be examined by the department’s assistant chief and lieutenants, and the external investigation’s evidence will be submitted to the Morgan County prosecutor to decide whether charges are warranted.
