David Clark, a 35-year-old man from Scunthorpe, has died after being struck by a Metropolitan Police vehicle while crossing a road in London. David Clark was an Australian national who had been living in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred in the Southwark area during the early hours of Wednesday, 7 January.

According to authorities, shortly after 12:30am two marked Metropolitan Police vehicles were travelling southbound on Borough High Street in response to an emergency call. Both vehicles were using blue lights and sirens at the time.

As the lead police car proceeded through the junction of Great Suffolk Street and Trinity Street, it collided with David Clark, who was in the process of crossing the roadway. The second police vehicle was following close behind.

Officers from both vehicles stopped immediately and began administering first aid at the scene. Despite their efforts, David Clark was pronounced dead at the location.

A post-mortem examination has already been completed, and officials have confirmed that an inquest will be opened at a later date.

IOPC Director Amanda Rowe expressed condolences to those affected, stating that sympathies are with David Clark’s family and friends in both the UK and Australia. She confirmed that investigators have met with the family, who will receive ongoing updates and have requested privacy during this period.

Rowe added that an independent inquiry is essential whenever a member of the public dies following contact with police, noting that the investigation is still at an early stage and that the officers involved are currently being treated as witnesses.

The watchdog has confirmed it has secured and reviewed CCTV footage, police body-worn camera video, and statements from the officers involved as part of its ongoing investigation.
