Fatal Greenville County shooting death of David William Lane – Obituary
David William Lane, 42, was killed after a violent confrontation with law enforcement in Greenville, South Carolina, following an ambush on a police officer in a patrol car. Authorities confirmed Lane’s identity after the incident, which ended with him dead inside his vehicle.
The attack occurred when Lane pulled his vehicle alongside a marked Greenville police car and opened fire on the officer inside. The officer sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital, but has since been released. Video from the scene, captured by surveillance cameras, shows the moments of gunfire before Lane drove away.
Greenville County deputies located Lane’s vehicle shortly after, resulting in a brief pursuit with multiple exchanges of gunfire. The chase concluded when Lane’s car crashed, and he was found dead at the scene. Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis described the shooting as an ambush-style attack on the officer.
Authorities noted that Lane had a history of troubling behavior. Deputies had received several complaints from neighbors earlier in January about his threatening actions and comments, but investigators determined the behavior did not warrant criminal charges at the time.Security measures had been put in place at the Hunting Downs apartment complex, where Lane had been reported to harass residents, including carrying a firearm near one resident’s apartment.
