Fatal Inverness accident death of George Watts and Derrick Hubbard – Obituary

George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, both 14, were killed Sunday in Inverness, Florida, after a sand tunnel they had been digging near Sportsman Park unexpectedly collapsed. Authorities discovered the boys buried inside the sand hole after being reported missing, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors described the teens as enjoying a typical afternoon outdoors when the accident occurred. A wooden cross now marks the site, and community members have left flowers and notes to honor the boys’ memory.

The Watts family chose to donate George’s organs, with residents gathering at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville to support the grieving families. Officials and the community described the organ donation as a meaningful way for the boys’ legacy to help others.

Both boys attended Inverness Middle School, and the Citrus County Schools superintendent noted the profound impact of their deaths on the district. Crisis and counseling teams are providing support to students in the aftermath of this tragic accident.
