Virginia Cramer, 71, was found dead Tuesday in her Kalamazoo apartment, with authorities confirming her death as a homicide linked to domestic violence.

Family members discovered Cramer’s body at an apartment complex on West Crosstown Parkway near South Westnedge Avenue. Investigators quickly identified 62-year-old Jose Louies Mata as a person of interest and arrested him later that day at a Wyoming apartment complex on Newstead Avenue near Alger Street SW.

Mata has been charged with open murder and was denied bond. Officials did not release details about how the killing occurred but confirmed the case is being investigated as domestic violence-related.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officials expressed the urgency of addressing domestic abuse, noting the swift arrest of Mata helps ensure he is held accountable.
