Brandon McNeal Campbell, 18, of Pleasant Grove, Alabama, was killed on January 10 after being shot in west Birmingham, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on the 1600 block of Tuscaloosa Avenue Southwest, where Campbell and a juvenile male were found with gunshot injuries. Campbell later succumbed to his wounds, while the juvenile, identified as Sam Slaughter, survived and is recovering.

On January 16, students, staff, and community members gathered at Pleasant Grove High School to honor Campbell’s life with a memorial balloon release. Speakers at the event included Campbell’s sister, friends, school staff, and Slaughter’s parents. Sam’s father shared memories of the close friendship between the two students, describing them as “peas in a pod,” and connected with Sam via FaceTime so classmates could see him for the first time since the shooting.

The vigil provided a space for the Pleasant Grove High School community to grieve Campbell’s death while supporting Slaughter’s recovery and emphasizing the importance of safety and open communication.
