Clariss Cook Jr., 87, was killed Thursday night when a fire broke out at his home on Dublin Circle in Madison, authorities confirmed. The Madison County Coroner, Dr. Tyler Berryhill, said an autopsy is being conducted at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville.

Firefighters from Madison Fire & Rescue responded to the emergency call at 9:11 p.m. and arrived on scene six minutes later, quickly beginning efforts to extinguish the blaze. Officials reported that flames were visible from outside the house upon their arrival.

The home, described by responders as a “hoarder situation,” presented challenges for crews attempting to enter and conduct a search. During the search, firefighters discovered Cook’s body upstairs.

Three fire marshals are investigating to determine the cause and scope of the fire.
