Fatal Tuolumne County pursuit crash death of Gideon Guy Griffin – Obituary
Gideon Guy Griffin, 37, of Angels Camp, died late Thursday night after crashing into a ditch during a police pursuit, authorities reported. The incident began when a deputy from the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Griffin near Mono Way and Hillsdale Drive over a suspected theft.
Deputies said Griffin had been checking doors at a closed business and taking bags left outside, then drove slowly around other nearby businesses. When officers tried to stop him, Griffin fled at high speeds, crossing into oncoming traffic multiple times.
The pursuit ended near Highway 108 and South Sunshine Road, where Griffin lost control, struck a traffic sign, left the roadway, and crashed into a ditch. Emergency personnel rendered aid, but Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene.
A records check later revealed that Griffin had an outstanding Post Release Community Supervision warrant. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
