Kevin D. Commander, a 59-year-old man, has died after being shot outside a gas station in High Point earlier this week, marking the city’s first criminal homicide of 2026, according to authorities.
Police said Commander was shot on January 12 outside the Circle K located on East Parris Avenue. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries several days after the incident.
Investigators are asking for the public’s help as they continue to piece together what happened. Detectives are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who was inside the Circle K or in the parking lot at the time of the shooting.
Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crimestoppers of High Point, while those wishing to speak directly with investigators may contact the High Point Police Department and ask for the Violent Crimes Unit.
Earlier in the investigation, authorities announced the arrest of a 20-year-old man in connection with the shooting. Police said the incident stemmed from an argument between a store clerk and a customer that escalated outside the business.
The suspect allegedly fled the scene but later turned himself in to police. He faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and is being held in the Guilford County Jail under a secured bond.
Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit continue to investigate the case and say additional details will be released as they become available.
