Travis Damonte Harris, 29, was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in DeKalb County following a confrontation with police near the Walmart on Chamblee Tucker Road, authorities confirmed. The incident reportedly began with a shoplifting report and escalated when Harris allegedly displayed a weapon.

According to Chamblee Police Chief Michael Dieppa, officers initially approached Harris inside the Walmart after the alleged theft. A struggle ensued, prompting Harris to flee into the parking area of the nearby Oliver apartment complex. There, officers confronted him again, and he allegedly brandished a firearm, leading police to open fire and fatally wound him on the scene.

Chief Dieppa noted that Harris entered a nearby restaurant during the incident, leaving behind signs of his injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation later confirmed his identity.

Police cordoned off sections of the Walmart and apartment complex parking lots for hours, affecting local residents. Colin Rains, whose vehicle was blocked by the tape, described the disruption as understandable given the circumstances.

Local residents said such violent incidents are unusual in the neighborhood. Allen Jordan, another community member, expressed concern over the lack of communication during the response, emphasizing the need for clearer updates in active situations.

Two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol. This marks the second officer-involved shooting at this Walmart following a shoplifting call, the previous one occurring in 2024 involving a suspect armed with a machete.

Authorities continue to investigate to reconstruct the events that led to Harris’s death.
