Fatal New Orleans, Louisiana shooting death of Kareem Harris – Obituary

Kareem Harris, a 19-year-old man from the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, was fatally shot at the historic Dooky Chase’s restaurant on the evening of January 16. Authorities confirmed his identity after the shooting, which occurred around 8 p.m. while Harris was being pursued by an assailant.

According to witnesses, Harris ran into the restaurant to escape the attacker, but the shooter followed him inside and opened fire, striking Harris and three other patrons who were standing near the front door. The three women were injured in the shooting and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Harris, however, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that the three women were not the intended targets, and the restaurant was not the target either.

The suspect, described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, remains at large. Mayor Helena Moreno reported that federal law enforcement, including two FBI agents, joined the search for the shooter. Authorities have offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Investigators are encouraging the public to review surveillance footage and contact authorities with any relevant information.

The incident has shaken the community, with Harris’ family present at the scene Friday night as the investigation continues.
