Gilbert police were dispatched early Monday, January 19, 2026, to a residence in the 500 block of East Sheffield Avenue after receiving a welfare check request shortly before 1:00 a.m. When officers entered the home, they discovered 21-year-old Angelys Spurgeon unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators observed evidence consistent with a gunshot wound.
Officers made sure that everyone else inside the house was safe and took 26-year-old Judah Chesley into custody at the scene. Authorities stated that Spurgeon and Chesley were believed to have been involved in a domestic relationship.
Detectives with the Gilbert Police Department took over the case, interviewing individuals connected to the incident and gathering physical evidence from the home. Following the initial investigation, Chesley was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail on one count of second-degree murder under Arizona law. The case remains under active investigation.
