Melissa Castrejon was killed Sunday night after being shot while inside a vehicle on Chicago’s West Side, authorities confirmed. Melissa Castrejon, a 17-year-old from the South Austin neighborhood, later died at a local hospital from her injuries.

According to Chicago police, the shooting occurred around 9:38 p.m. in the 1800 block of North Latrobe Avenue in the North Austin area. Investigators said Castrejon was sitting in a car when she was shot in the back by a man known to her.

Emergency responders transported her to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed that she did not survive her injuries.

Police reported that no suspects have been taken into custody. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the community mourns the loss of the teenage girl.
