Fatal Elyria police shooting death of John Johnson – Obituary
John Johnson, 37, from Lorain County, Ohio, was fatally shot by Elyria police on Wednesday following a series of violent incidents and a high-speed pursuit.
Authorities report that Johnson had robbed a Brinks truck driver at gunpoint around 3 p.m. at an AT&T store on West River Road in Elyria. After forcing the driver into the truck and taking an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled in another vehicle, prompting a chase through Elyria and Lorain and eastbound on Route 20 into North Olmsted. Speeds reportedly reached 100 mph.
Law enforcement from Lorain and North Olmsted assisted and attempted to stop Johnson using spike strips. He later exited his vehicle and entered an apartment complex on Clareshire Drive, where he allegedly forced a woman into her home at gunpoint. An Elyria officer then shot Johnson at the scene. He was transported to Fairview Hospital and pronounced dead.
A Glock handgun, believed to have been used by Johnson, was recovered inside the apartment. No officers or civilians were injured. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will conduct a full investigation.
