Fatal Tucson pedestrian crash death of Walter James Pain – Obituary
Walter James Pain, 59, has died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle in midtown Tucson, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on January 17 near the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Alvernon Way. Tucson Police Department Midtown officers and the Tucson Fire Department responded after receiving reports of a collision involving a pedestrian.
Investigators said Pain was crossing Speedway Boulevard from north to south across six lanes of traffic outside of a marked or unmarked crosswalk. He was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time of the crash. A Hyundai traveling eastbound in the curb lane struck him as he crossed the roadway.
Pain was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later succumbed to those injuries. The driver of the Hyundai was not hurt and remained at the scene following the crash.
Police reported that the driver was evaluated by an officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit and showed no signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs. The investigation relied on witness statements and physical evidence collected at the scene.
