Fatal Wilmington car crash death of Amos Battle – Obituary
Wilmington police are examining the circumstances surrounding a deadly collision that claimed the life of a local pedestrian early Monday morning. The incident happened just before 7 a.m. along the 300 block of South College Road, where officers were dispatched after reports of a person struck by a vehicle.
When first responders arrived, they found a man lying in the roadway with severe injuries. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead as a result of those injuries. Authorities later confirmed the victim was Amos Battle, a 54-year-old Wilmington resident.
Investigators with the Wilmington Police Department say the case remains under active review, and no additional details about contributing factors have been released so far.
Battle’s death marks the first pedestrian fatality recorded in Wilmington for 2026. In comparison, the city saw multiple pedestrian and cyclist deaths last year, highlighting ongoing concerns about roadway safety.
City officials have previously acknowledged these dangers. In late 2025, Wilmington adopted the Vision Zero initiative, a global safety program focused on redesigning streets and transportation systems to reduce the risk of fatal and serious crashes. The long-term objective is to eliminate traffic-related deaths and severe injuries by the year 2036.
Data from past years show that some Wilmington roadways experience more fatal incidents than others. Market Street has been identified as the most dangerous, with South College Road and Carolina Beach Road also seeing a high number of serious crashes.
