Fatal Palm Springs hit-and-run car crash death of Ricardo Marano – Obituary
Palm Springs residents are mourning the loss of Ricardo Marano, a well-known local figure affectionately called “The Walking Man,” who was killed in a hit-and-run collision earlier this month. Marano, 56, died after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene during the early morning hours of Jan. 18.
According to the Palm Springs Police Department, the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. near the 1000 block of East Vista Chino. Marano was later identified by the Riverside County Coroner on Jan. 21.
Investigators say they executed a search warrant at a property in Thousand Palms on Jan. 20, where they recovered a black 2005 Chevrolet Silverado believed to be connected to the crash. As of now, no arrests have been made, and police continue working to identify the driver responsible.
Marano was a familiar and beloved presence throughout Palm Springs, often seen walking the city streets day and night regardless of the weather. Many residents knew him by nicknames such as “Walking Jesus” or “Tan Jesus,” and remembered him for his distinctive appearance and friendly demeanor.
A close friend, Gina Garcia, shared memories of Marano, describing him as warm, humorous, and kind-hearted. She said they often shared meals and long conversations, and noted that common assumptions about him being homeless or in need were incorrect.
To honor his life, community members are planning a vigil scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m. Participants will gather between 351 and 353 North Hermosa Street before walking together to Ruth Hardy Park, where candles will be lit and flowers placed in Marano’s memory.
Anyone with information related to the hit-and-run is encouraged to contact the Palm Springs Police Department Traffic Division.
