Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies in Parkland on Sunday as 34-year-old Alrico Ray Coleman. Coleman was pronounced dead at a local hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds; his death was ruled a homicide by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched at 6:25 a.m. to a grocery store near 112th Street South and Park Avenue South after a 54-year-old man reported being stabbed. According to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, Coleman approached the victim, asked about his religious beliefs, and attacked him and his dog after the victim said he was Christian. The victim and dog were treated at separate hospitals.

Coleman was later tracked by a Sheriff’s K-9 unit and spotted around 8:40 a.m. in the 800 block of 112th Street South. He allegedly fled behind a nearby home and, when deputies attempted to engage him, Coleman advanced while armed, prompting officers to fire. Deputies provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.
