Authorities have identified the young man who was killed in a devastating head-on collision involving a semitruck that was traveling the wrong direction on U.S. Highway 287 earlier this month. The victim was 21-year-old Cobey Giovanni Copeland Jr. of Yuba City, California, who died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, troopers were dispatched just before 5 a.m. on January 24 after reports of a semitruck driving northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 287. The truck collided head-on with a Toyota sedan north of Fort Collins, near milepost 355, close to West Larimer County Road 54E.

Copeland, who was riding as a passenger in the sedan, became trapped inside the vehicle following the impact. Emergency crews were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office later ruled his death an accident caused by multiple blunt force injuries.

The driver of the sedan, a 20-year-old woman, was rescued from the wreckage and transported to a hospital with serious injuries. As of the latest update, no public information has been released regarding her current condition.

Investigators said the force of the collision caused both the sedan and the semitruck to catch fire. The semitruck driver, identified as 24-year-old David Perez Carrillo of New York, was taken into custody and booked into the Larimer County Jail. He is facing multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and driving on the wrong side of the highway.

The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol as the case proceeds through the legal system.
