Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by police in Springfield on December 20 as 38-year-old Dennis Girard. Girard was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by gunfire from an officer.

Springfield police responded to Worcester Street following a 911 call reporting a man armed with a knife and displaying psychotic behavior. During the encounter, an officer discharged a weapon, hitting Girard.

The incident remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Department and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office. Once the review is complete, the findings regarding the use of force will be made public.
