Demarcus Irish, 36, of Clinton, Maryland, was identified as the man killed during a police-involved shooting in White Plains, according to the Maryland Attorney General’s Office. His identity was released two days after the incident occurred.
The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. on February 11 near the intersection of Newport Circle and Cobbler Place. Authorities said officers were attempting to arrest Irish on an active warrant and serve a protective order connected to a series of escalating domestic-related incidents.
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Irish pulled out a large machete as officers approached and advanced toward them with the weapon raised. Two officers, Sgt. Andrew Coulby, a 12-year veteran, and Police Officer First Class Brennan Kunz, a 15-year veteran, fired their weapons during the encounter.
Officials confirmed that all officers on scene were wearing body cameras and that the incident was recorded. The shooting is under review by the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, which handles all fatal law enforcement encounters in Maryland.
