A 32-year-old man from Avondale was killed during a confrontation with Goodyear police officers on February 10, authorities reported.

The victim, Dominic Diaz, was pronounced dead at the scene following a struggle with an officer who was attempting to detain him near Litchfield Road and Interstate 10. Police said the encounter escalated when Diaz reached for the officer’s firearm, prompting a defensive discharge.

According to officials, Diaz continued advancing toward the officer while attempting to grab the officer’s vest and weapon, even after an attempt was made to create distance. The officer regained control of the firearm and fired, striking Diaz. Emergency responders at the scene provided medical aid, but he did not survive.

The officer involved was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening and has since been released. Avondale police are conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
