Metropolitan Police Department officials reported that Kenny Jimmenez Rivera, a 26-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., lost his life after a collision involving a garbage truck while he was riding an electric bicycle in the northwest section of the city. The incident also left a female e-bike rider seriously hurt, and she was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said Rivera was declared dead at the location of the crash, which took place Friday afternoon at the crossing of Kansas Avenue and Upshur Street in the Petworth area. Investigators determined that the truck struck both cyclists while turning right and then left the scene without stopping.
Law enforcement later located the vehicle in Hyattsville after reviewing surveillance footage. The driver was identified during the investigation, but officials have not yet confirmed whether charges will be filed as the case remains under review by the department’s Major Crash Division.
Police are continuing to gather details and have asked anyone who may have information related to the collision to contact authorities.
