Fatal Sumter County pedestrian crash death of Ernest McCants – Obituary

Ernest McCants, 54, was killed Saturday evening in a collision on Red Bay Road in Sumter County, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred near the intersection with High Street, as McCants attempted to cross a bridge spanning Turkey Creek.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a westbound 2019 Kia struck McCants while he was walking across the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.

The Kia’s driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. No other individuals were harmed. Law enforcement and the coroner’s office are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and an autopsy is scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina.
