Bradly “Birdy” Burden, a 22-year-old student at Niagara University, lost his life in a single-vehicle accident in Niagara Falls during the early morning hours of Tuesday. The crash happened at about 1 a.m. when the 2015 BMW he was driving struck a utility pole and then a chain-link fence.

Authorities reported that Burden was thrown from the vehicle during the impact and was declared dead at the scene by responding officers. Niagara Falls police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Investigators indicated that excessive speed, poor road conditions and unsuitable tires may have contributed to the crash. Snow and icy pavement were also mentioned by school officials as possible factors.

Burden, originally from Anchorage, Alaska, was a sophomore majoring in management. He played defense on Niagara University’s Division II men’s hockey team. Teammates and his coach remembered him as someone who consistently brought positivity and energy, both on the ice and in daily life.
