James W. Smith, a 32-year-old from Bishopville, was found dead inside a burning truck along Interstate 20 in Columbia early Monday morning. Authorities later confirmed his death was the result of a homicide.
According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, Coroner Naida Rutherford identified Smith as the victim. While the official cause of death has not been released, investigators previously indicated he was likely shot.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. near the Clemson Road exit. Deputies were called to assist after the South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to what was initially reported as a single-vehicle crash but discovered evidence suggesting violence.
Officials reported that the truck was already engulfed in flames when it was located, and Smith was the only occupant inside.
