Authorities have confirmed the identity of a towing technician who lost his life Wednesday morning after being struck along Interstate 165 in southern Daviess County. The victim was David W. Fischer, 71, of the 600 block of Eastwood Drive in Owensboro.

According to the Daviess County Coroner’s Office, Fischer died at the scene after the collision, which occurred around 6:50 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-165 near the Daviess–Ohio county line.

Officials said Fischer had stepped out of his wrecker truck to assist a disabled semi-truck that was parked along the shoulder of the highway. While he was helping with the recovery operation, another semi traveling southbound struck him.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office described Fischer as a respected figure throughout the region due to his decades of work in the towing and recovery field. In a statement released Thursday, the agency noted that Fischer had spent more than 50 years serving motorists across western Kentucky, earning a reputation for professionalism, skill, and kindness.

The sheriff’s office added that countless people relied on Fischer during difficult roadside situations and remembered him as someone who consistently helped others in times of need. Law enforcement officers, fellow tow operators, and emergency responders expressed their condolences to his family as they mourn his loss.

Investigators said the driver of the semi involved in the crash initially fled the area. However, deputies from the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Hartford Police Department located the truck a short time later parked along a roadway in Ohio County. The driver was reportedly examining damage to the vehicle when authorities arrived.

The driver, identified as Suk Subba, 31, of Antioch, Tennessee, was taken into custody. Officials said the truck was seized as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

Subba has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, first-degree wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury or death, and failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle.

The investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.
