Authorities have identified the pilot who died after a helicopter crash near Mojave earlier this week as Steven Madewell, 62, of New Plymouth, Idaho.
According to the Kern County Coroner’s Office, Madewell was operating the helicopter when it went down in an open field near the intersection of Oak Creek Road and 70th Street West. The crash occurred at approximately 3:16 p.m. on March 9, and Madewell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the helicopter had been engaged in work installing powerlines in the area prior to the accident. The aircraft crashed while carrying out that operation.
The National Transportation Safety Board is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of an ongoing investigation.
Officials also confirmed that a postmortem examination will be performed to establish the exact cause and manner of Madewell’s death.
