Authorities in Phoenix have identified 22-year-old Aidan Piekarz as the man who was fatally shot by a police officer early on March 12. The incident occurred near 32nd Street and Paradise Lane just after 2 a.m.
According to Phoenix police, officers encountered Piekarz walking on the roadway while armed with a handgun. He did not comply with repeated commands to drop the weapon and advanced toward the officers, prompting one officer to discharge their firearm. When Piekarz fell and continued to aim his gun, a second shot was fired. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. The officer involved has not been publicly identified.
This shooting is one of several recent fatal police-involved incidents in Phoenix. The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division is conducting an independent review of the case, while details regarding the events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
