Fatal Chesterfield plane crash death of Edward Ruhbeck – Obituary
Authorities have confirmed that a pilot was killed after his cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, Missouri. The victim has been identified as 65-year-old Edward Ruhbeck.
The incident occurred on the morning of March 17 when Ruhbeck was piloting an Aero Commander 500-B. Shortly after departure at 12:21 a.m., the plane experienced mechanical trouble, prompting the pilot to attempt an emergency return to the airport. The aircraft crashed and caught fire a short distance from the runway, and Ruhbeck was the only person on board.
Witnesses described Ruhbeck as appearing aware of the danger and taking actions to avoid harming people on the ground. Dave Schubert, deputy director of the airport, commended Ruhbeck for managing the landing in a way that prevented additional casualties or property damage.
The plane was owned by Central Air Southwest. Company officials expressed condolences and stated they are cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, with the Federal Aviation Administration and Spirit of St. Louis Airport assisting in the review. The airport’s main runway was temporarily closed following the accident.
