Fatal QEII Highway drive-by shooting death of Birinder Singh – Obituary

A 22-year-old man was killed in a sudden drive-by shooting while traveling with friends toward Banff, leaving investigators searching for answers.

Birinder Singh, an Edmonton resident, was riding with two longtime friends on March 14 when their vehicle came under gunfire along the QEII Highway, just south of Leduc. The group had been heading out for a trip when a pickup truck approached them on the road.

According to the surviving passengers, someone inside the truck gestured toward them, and Singh responded with a wave. Moments later, shots were fired from the other vehicle.

A bullet struck Singh in the neck, leaving him unable to speak as he signaled to his friends that he had been hit. In the chaos, his companions managed to take control of the car and guide it to the side of Highway 2 near Township Road 490.

They immediately called for emergency assistance and attempted to stop the bleeding, but despite a quick response from first responders, Singh died at the scene due to severe blood loss.

The suspects fled the area immediately after the shooting, and no arrests have been made so far.

Friends of Singh said they are deeply shaken by the incident and cannot understand why the attack happened, describing it as seemingly random. They also expressed concern that the shooting may have been motivated by hate, though investigators have not confirmed any such motive.

Authorities continue to collect witness accounts and review possible dashcam footage as they work to determine whether the shooting was targeted or random.
