Fatal Rochester police shooting death of Cleavon White – Obituary
Cleavon White, 47, of Rochester, was shot and killed by a Rochester police officer on March 11 during a response to a mental health crisis at an apartment on the 1900 block of Ashland Drive Northwest. Officers and a crisis response social worker arrived around 9:30 p.m. and encountered White, who was acting erratically and reportedly posed a potential threat to himself and others.
When authorities attempted to place White on a 72-hour mental health hold, he refused and a struggle ensued. During the altercation, White grabbed an officer’s firearm while it was still holstered, resulting in gunfire. Officer Josiah Duit, who has three years of law enforcement experience, discharged his weapon multiple times, striking White.
Medical aid was provided at the scene, and White was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys campus, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident, and findings will be submitted to the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office for review.
