Police in Austin have confirmed the identity of a man killed in a shooting that took place Sunday evening in the eastern part of the city near the Mueller neighborhood. The victim, 47-year-old Nicholas Zarate, was found with severe injuries after officers responded to a disturbance call.
Authorities said officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of Loyola Lane at about 5:07 p.m. following reports of a possible shooting. When they arrived just minutes later, they discovered Zarate lying on the ground with injuries that were not survivable. He was officially pronounced dead at 5:28 p.m.
Investigators revealed that Zarate had been shot by an individual who fled the scene on foot. At this time, no surveillance footage has been recovered, and police have not released details about any suspects.
Detectives, along with crime scene personnel, are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The case represents the 16th homicide recorded in Austin so far in 2026.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation. Tips can be submitted directly to the Austin Police Department or anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program, with a possible reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
