Fatal Brunswick Mountain fall death of Yan Cen – Obituary

Yan Cen, a visitor from China, has died following a fall on Brunswick Mountain on Saturday. Friends and members of the Pacific Northwest Outdoor Association, a group supporting the Chinese community in the region, described Cen as a kind and passionate individual who was always willing to help others.

The association has launched a GoFundMe to assist Cen’s family with the financial challenges they now face, including hospital costs, handling his remains, and repatriation of his ashes. The fundraiser has already collected over $63,000.

The incident occurred as a group of 14 hikers was descending the mountain. One woman slipped and fell about 20 metres down steep terrain before being stopped by a tree. Cen attempted to climb down to assist her but lost his footing, sliding more than 100 metres into a snow moat above a waterfall.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue, assisted by North Shore Rescue, responded to the scene to extract the injured hikers. Cen was found in critical condition and later passed away on March 22, the day after the accident, while the woman he tried to help remained stable.
