SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) is currently investigating a hit-and-run incident after a man was discovered in a ditch.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the 61000 block of Locust Road at approximately 8:04 a.m. on August 28, following a 911 call reporting the discovery of 53-year-old Daryl M. Payne from South Bend, according to a press release from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office.
Preliminary findings from the FACT investigation indicate that Payne was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound, which then fled the scene. Investigators are actively working to identify both the vehicle involved and the suspect responsible, the prosecutor’s office stated.
