On Thursday evening, Dallas Police Department rookie officer Darron Burks, 46, was fatally shot during a targeted attack in Dallas. Two other officers, Senior Corporals Jamie Farmer and Karissa David, were also injured in the incident, which ultimately ended in the suspect’s death following a police chase.
Around 10:10 p.m., officers responded to an “officer in distress” call on East Ledbetter Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Burks had been shot near his squad car. According to Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, the suspect, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, executed Burks while filming the incident on his cellphone.
The situation escalated quickly as a police dispatcher, noticing something was amiss over the radio, sent additional officers to the scene. Cobb-Bey opened fire on the arriving officers, injuring both Farmer and David. A high-speed chase ensued, leading law enforcement to Lewisville, where Cobb-Bey was fatally shot after emerging from his vehicle with a shotgun.
The incident has left the Dallas Police Department and the community mourning the loss of Burks, a former teacher remembered as a dedicated officer and friend. Burks was pronounced dead at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, while Farmer and David were hospitalized, with David remaining in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing, with multiple agencies involved.
