A man has been charged with murder, and a woman faces attempted murder charges following an October shooting in Southeast Portland that resulted in the death of Cali M. Durbin and left two others seriously injured.
William A. Watson, 32, from Pierce County, Washington, was taken into custody on Saturday. He faces charges of second-degree murder and illegal gun possession by a felon for his role in the killing of 26-year-old Durbin on October 15.
Candice M. Hicks, 34, of Covington, Washington, has also been arrested. She is charged with second-degree attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon.
East Precinct officers discovered Durbin deceased around 4 a.m. on Southeast Foster Road, near 86th Avenue.
Authorities have not released the names of the two injured individuals or provided details on what led to the shooting.
According to family members, Durbin, a mother of three, was out with friends when the incident occurred. Her older sister, Kayla, shared that Durbin was the youngest of five sisters and grew up in Portland. Kayla, who requested that her last name not be published for privacy reasons, stated that she was unfamiliar with the suspects and did not know of any connection between them and her sister, who worked as a caregiver for the elderly.
“My sister didn’t deserve any of this,” Kayla expressed to The Oregonian/OregonLive. “She was and is truly loved and missed by so many.”
Both Watson and Hicks are currently being held in custody out of state and are awaiting extradition to Oregon. Assistance in one of the arrests was provided by criminal investigators at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. A U.S. Military spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for further details regarding the arrest.
