Fatal San Diego construction accident death of Joel Olea Gomez – Obituary
Joel Olea Gomez, a 27-year-old construction worker from San Marcos, tragically passed away on Wednesday morning in an accident near Scripps Ranch High School, as confirmed by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The incident occurred when Gomez and a colleague were working in a 20-foot-deep trench at the intersection of Hoyt Park Drive and Scripps Ranch Boulevard. They were assisting another worker in positioning a metal pipe for a water project. Authorities reported that Gomez managed to notice the impending collapse of the trench wall and attempted to escape. However, he was caught and buried under debris when the trench collapsed.
The rescue operation quickly shifted to a recovery effort after paramedics from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department declared Gomez deceased due to severe injuries. The Medical Examiner’s Office listed the cause of death as crush injuries to the torso.
According to Dan Eddy, the deputy chief of operations for the department, the pipe involved was a four-foot steel and concrete structure. Heavy machinery, including an excavator, was used to remove the pipe from Gomez.
The California Occupational Health and Safety Administration is leading the investigation into the incident.
