Seven people lost their lives in a tragic bus accident in Bovina, Mississippi, on Saturday, August 31, 2024. The Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed that all the victims were from Mexico.
The deceased include Miguel Arriaga, 61; Victor A. Garcia, 32; Moises A. Garcia, 31; Kain Gutierrez, 8; Perla Gutierrez, 16; Elia Guzman, 63; and Angelica Palomino, 16. Kain and Perla Gutierrez were identified as siblings by Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey.
Mexico’s foreign relations secretary, Alicia Bárcena, extended condolences to the families and offered consular assistance. The crash also resulted in injuries to approximately three dozen passengers. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), along with state and local authorities, is conducting an ongoing investigation.
The bus, a 2018 Volvo operated by Autobuses Regiomontanos, was en route from Atlanta to Dallas when a tire malfunction caused the vehicle to veer off Interstate 20, overturning near Vicksburg, Mississippi. Six victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a seventh died in the hospital.
The NTSB is examining various factors including vehicle maintenance, road conditions, and the safety measures in place for passengers.
The transit company involved has a history of providing cross-border travel between the U.S. and Mexico, with a fleet that they claim undergoes daily maintenance.
A preliminary report on the accident is expected within 30 days, though the full investigation could take up to two years.
