Fatal Billings hit-and-run death of Lonnie Dale Stewart – Obituary
The victim of a hit-and-run accident that occurred Monday night has been identified as Lonnie Dale Stewart of Billings, according to Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Coroner Valerie Juhl. Stewart sustained multiple blunt force injuries, which led to his death.
Authorities have ruled Stewart’s death as accidental, but the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
Initial findings suggest that the vehicle involved, driven by a 39-year-old man, was heading eastbound when it struck Stewart, a 51-year-old man who was crossing the road. The driver initially fled the scene but later returned.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Billings Police Department provided more details.
Officers responding to multiple reports found Stewart in the roadway, having been hit by a car. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The driver, who had left the scene between two shopping centers, later returned and flagged down a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The Billings Police Department’s crash team is now handling the investigation.
Authorities extended their gratitude to the Billings Fire Department, Montana Highway Patrol, and AMR for their assistance in the investigation.
