Fatal Denver shooting death of Victor Anthony De Santiago – Obituary.
The Office of the Coroner for Adams and Broomfield counties confirmed on Tuesday that Victor Anthony De Santiago, 32, of Thornton, was killed during a confrontation on U.S. Highway 36.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon around 1:18 p.m., west of Federal Boulevard, when De Santiago opened fire on a Colorado State Patrol trooper.
During the shootout, a Colorado State Patrol trooper, Cpl. Tye Simcox, was struck in the lower right arm while inside his marked Ford F-150 patrol vehicle.
According to CSP Chief Col. Matthew Packard, De Santiago was driving a black Chevy pickup truck and shot at the trooper with a semi-automatic handgun.
Packard noted that Simcox responded with quick and decisive action. “Our trooper was targeted by someone intent on killing him, but he acted bravely and saved not only his life but potentially others in the community,” Packard said at a press conference following the incident.
Simcox returned fire using his department-issued rifle, hitting De Santiago, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Despite his injuries, Simcox managed to apply a tourniquet to himself and waited for assistance.
De Santiago, a U.S. citizen born in California and a longtime Colorado resident, had a criminal history in the state dating back to his youth. His adult criminal record began in 2015 when he was arrested in Weld County on drug-related charges, for which he served 184 days in jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.
An autopsy has been completed, but the cause of death will not be released until the investigation by the 17th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response Team is finished.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has related vehicle damage to contact them by dialing *CSP (*277).
