Fatal Prince Frederick crash claims the life of Travis Gregory Pope – Obituary

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – Authorities have identified 36-year-old Travis Gregory Pope of Prince Frederick as the victim in a fatal pedestrian accident on September 12, 2024. According to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Pope was struck by a vehicle while crossing Solomons Island Road near Church Street.

The incident occurred around 8:04 p.m., when officers from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a car on northbound Solomons Island Road. Preliminary investigations indicate that Pope was walking east across Route 4, from Hallowing Point Road to Church Street, when he was hit by a 2017 Hyundai Accent driven by Asaun Jaziah Hudson, 23, of St. Leonard.

Pope sustained severe injuries and was transported to Calvert Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Hudson, the driver, was unharmed, and initial reports suggest that speed was not a factor in the crash. However, authorities believe that alcohol may have played a role on the part of the pedestrian.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and is asking for public assistance. Anyone with information about the crash or who may have witnessed it is urged to contact DFC Michael Daily at [email protected] or call 410-535-2800, citing case number 24-70790.

This accident highlights ongoing concerns over pedestrian safety in Maryland. According to state transportation officials, pedestrian fatalities remain a persistent issue, with numerous deaths and injuries occurring each year. This tragedy serves as a reminder for both pedestrians and drivers to stay alert, especially during low-visibility hours like nighttime.

Local law enforcement emphasizes the importance of road safety, urging pedestrians to use crosswalks and wear reflective gear in dark conditions, and reminding drivers to stay vigilant for those on foot. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office regularly conducts campaigns focusing on traffic and pedestrian safety to help prevent future accidents.

As the investigation progresses, the Sheriff’s Office will provide further updates. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to support Pope’s family during this difficult time. The incident is a somber reminder of the shared responsibility to ensure safety on the roads for all, whether walking or driving.
