The Brockton Public Schools community is grieving the loss of Jaylen Bush-Victorian, a rising fifth grader at Downey School, who tragically passed away over the weekend in a car crash caused by an alleged drunk driver. Jaylen’s family, including his siblings who also attend Brockton schools, and his parents, were seriously injured in the accident.
The Brockton school district expressed its sorrow in a social media post, sharing condolences with the family. Jaylen’s mother works as a paraprofessional at the Barrett Russell Early Childhood Center. The district has pledged ongoing support to the family during this difficult time, offering various resources as they navigate their grief.
Grief counselors will be available at Downey School on Wednesday to provide support to students and staff affected by Jaylen’s loss.
The driver involved in the crash, 42-year-old Michael Escolas of Oxford, appeared in Wrentham District Court on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty. Escolas faces multiple charges, including motor vehicle manslaughter, operating under the influence (second offense), negligent driving, and motor vehicle theft. He is currently held on a $100,000 cash bail and is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on September 19, according to the District Attorney’s office.
At the time of the report, authorities had not released Jaylen’s name, but his identity has since been confirmed.
