Khalil Peters, a 20-year-old aspiring musician, was identified by his family as the passenger who perished in a late-night vehicle collision at Lake Mead and Rainbow boulevards in Las Vegas. According to James Johnson III, Peters was engaged to his daughter and a 2022 Cimmaron High School graduate.
Peters was riding in a Dodge Journey driven by Johnson’s wife, Thordis Willis, as confirmed by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police. They were stopped at a red light after leaving northbound U.S. 95 at Lake Mead while on their way to McDonald’s.
The accident occurred just before midnight on September 16. Authorities reported that a Jeep Wrangler traveling north on Rainbow collided with a raised concrete median, causing it to veer into the southbound lanes before realigning. The Jeep then struck a curb and entered the intersection, where it hit the Dodge Journey, which subsequently collided with a Kia Optima also stopped at the light.
Peters’ death marks the 106th traffic fatality in Las Vegas for 2024. Two additional fatalities from crashes on September 15 brought the total to 108, a rise of over 6% compared to the previous year.
The police have not disclosed whether speed or impairment were involved in the crash. The department has been actively promoting traffic safety on social media, highlighting excessive speed, failure to yield, and pedestrian errors as major contributors to accidents. The Traffic Weekly Action Report notes a 100% increase in excessive speed-related incidents and a 50% rise in pedestrian errors this year.
A vigil for Peters is set for Wednesday, September 18, at 7 p.m. near the Rainbow and U.S. 95 North off-ramp by Lake Mead, and the community is encouraged to attend.
