In a recent home invasion in Houston, three men are accused of assaulting a 26-year-old mother, zip-tying her, and shooting a Houston police officer. Raymond Perez, 35, who allegedly fired at Officer Scott Durfee, faces multiple charges including aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault against a public servant, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. At the time of the incident on Tuesday, Perez was out on bond for previous felony charges. He has not yet had a court appearance for these new charges but is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
Michael Perez, 38, who was also at the scene, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and was on bond for possession of a controlled substance. A hearing officer did not set a bond for him during a probable cause court session. Brian Garcia Chavez, 18, is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, accused of being the getaway driver. His bond was set at $100,000.
The victim’s father, Ben Bates, reported that his daughter was home alone with her young children when the perpetrators, posing as delivery workers, arrived. Believing it was a mistake, she opened the door, only for the men to forcibly enter and restrain her. The attackers moved her around the house searching for valuables in front of her children. A neighbor, noticing suspicious activity, called 911 and reported hearing the woman’s screams.
Police arrived swiftly, with Raymond Perez allegedly shooting Officer Durfee in the leg. Durfee was treated and released from the hospital. Both Perez men were apprehended near the crime scene, and Chavez was arrested at his workplace, Taco Bell.
Bates said his daughter is deeply distressed and is temporarily staying away from the scene. He expressed gratitude for the neighbor’s prompt action and the police response, emphasizing the emotional impact of the invasion on his family.
