Two men who were killed in an early morning shooting at a park in Keswick, north of Toronto, have been identified by police.
York Regional Police (YRP) responded to reports of gunfire at Bayview Park, located near Bayview and Lowndes avenues, just before 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were identified on Thursday as 21-year-old Reilly MacDonald of Keswick and 39-year-old Mark Stucliffe, whose place of residence was not disclosed by authorities.
Later that evening, police arrested two suspects in connection with the double homicide. John McKay, 19, and Ethan Pashak-McNeil, 21, both from Barrie, Ontario, have been charged with first-degree murder.
Authorities have not provided details about a potential motive, though they stated the suspects and victims likely knew each other. Investigators confirmed that there are no other suspects and that the incident was not random, posing no further threat to public safety.
As police investigated, several nearby schools were put under hold-and-secure protocols as a precaution, though the York Region District School Board confirmed the schools were not directly involved in the incident.
Local residents expressed shock over the violence in their typically quiet neighborhood. Ben Borup, a nearby resident, reported hearing as many as seven gunshots and remarked on the unexpected nature of such an event in the community.
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact YRP’s homicide unit or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
